The Biggest Solar Projects in 2024: A Glimpse into Substantial Sustainability

The world is witnessing an unprecedented surge in large-scale solar energy projects. As countries, organizations, and investors strive to combat climate change and transition to more sustainable sources of power, 2024 is poised to be an exciting year for massive solar projects. Among these projects and existing plant additions, the United States, China, and India are set to be home to some of the largest solar initiatives ever undertaken.

This article explores the largest proposed solar projects in the US and the largest solar projects in the world, shedding light on the incredible strides being made in the realm of renewable energy.

We’ll also highlight what will be the world’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) slated for completion in 2025.

The Largest Proposed 2024 Solar Projects in the US

The United States has long been a leader in the field of renewable energy, and in 2024, it’s taking a significant step forward with the proposed construction of the largest solar and battery project on its soil — the CD Solar Project. Submitted by EDF Renewable Development, Inc. to the Public Utilities Commision of Nevada in 2021, the multi-billion dollar project would span a whopping 18,000 acres of federal land and take around two years to complete from its expected start date in early 2024.

Another notable solar project to begin construction next year in Nevada is the Gemini Solar Project. This is more than just a massive solar farm — it’s a testament to the commitment of the United States to combat climate change and reduce its carbon footprint. The project is expected to offset approximately 384,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, which is equivalent to taking more than 80,000 cars off the road each year.

These projects not only contribute significantly to the state of Nevada’s renewable energy goals but also serve as examples of what is possible when innovation and sustainable energy planning come together. It highlights the United States’ dedication to a greener future and its pursuit of clean energy on an unprecedented scale.

The Largest Solar Projects in the World

While the CD and Gemini Solar Projects in the US are substantial, as of 2023, the title of the world’s largest solar plant goes to the Golmud Solar Park located in the Qinghai Province, China. So far, with a 2.8GW installed capacity, this mammoth solar installation is unparalleled in its size and impact.

Following closely behind the Golmud Solar Park is India’s Bhadla Solar Park. This massive facility sits on 14,000 acres in the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, India. Recent upgrades have raised the facility’s total capacity to 2.7GW.

The Largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

A collaborative project between ESG-conscious investment firm BlackRock, Akaysha Energy, and the Oregon-based Powin, the Waratah Super Battery (WSB) project will be the largest BESS in the world.

The project is expected to be completed in 2025 and will provide support for the rapidly expanding solar infrastructure in New South Wales, Australia.

The Broader Impact

The growth of large-scale utility solar projects is a clear indicator of the global shift towards clean and renewable energy sources. As nations worldwide set ambitious targets to reduce their carbon footprints and transition away from fossil fuels, these mega-projects represent significant milestones in that journey.

In addition to reducing carbon emissions, these solar projects create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and bolster energy security. They also help mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing the need for fossil fuels and decreasing the environmental impact of energy production. Solar projects in 2024 are paving the way for a more sustainable future. These remarkable initiatives showcase the commitment of nations to combat climate change, harness the power of the sun, and transition to cleaner sources of energy on an unprecedented scale.

Transitioning Toward a Brighter Future

It’s not solely up to the big guys to pull the planet back from the precipice of the climate crisis. Individual homeowners and business owners need to take the initiative and make an effort towards going green. Gurr Brothers Energy has been helping people make the transition to solar and save a bundle in the process.

As the world witnesses the impact of these solar giants, it becomes increasingly clear that the future of energy lies in the brilliance of the sun.
